I probably don’t have to remind you that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner with all of the pink heart decorations and chocolate advertisements everywhere, but you’re planning a wedding. You’re busy and on a shoestring budget while saving for your dream wedding. I get it!
Making time for your relationship is a huge deal though. You’re both probably working long hours, are stressed from planning a wedding, and trying to still take care of the day-to-day details. This is all the more reason to make time to date each other! As you’re in the engagement period, you’re building the foundation for your marriage, so it’s even more important to invest in your relationship. Spending time with someone you love can also help raise your levels of oxytocin (your happy hormone), while decreasing your cortisol (your stress hormone).
Here’s some ideas for date night with your soon to be spouse!
-Go to a comedy show! If you want something to look forward to, plan out a date night around when your favorite comedian is in town. If you’d like something a little more low-key, Netflix (or YouTube) has an abundance of comedy! Jacob and I like Jim Gaffigan, who is on Netflix, and Jon Crist, who is on YouTube.
-Go out to your local library or Barnes and Noble and find some good books! If you’re pinching pennies, read them in the chairs or bookstore cafe. If you’ve got some cash burning a hole in your pocket, buy yourself each a book and go home and read them on the couch. Bonus points if you turn on your real or fake Netflix fireplace for added coziness!
-Take a trip to the zoo or aquarium. These school-trip settings bring back memories of first dates and being head over heels about that person holding your hand. Many local zoos will also have scavenger hunts. Try theirs, or make your own!
-Make dinner together. Go on Pinterest and find a new recipe you’d like to try, and give it your best shot! You can do this with food you already have in the house, or you can add going to the grocery store together as part of your date night.
-Volunteer to help with a teen fun day or trip at your local church. Teens seem like they have limitless energy-which Lordy knows you need when you’re planning a wedding! If you and your soon to be spouse are on the same team for activities and games, you can work on how you handle pressure. If not, I say, bring it on! Don’t be afraid of some friendly rivalry. After all, you need something to remind them about next time you loose a round of Uno.
-Dinner and a movie is a classic, and not without reason! Sometimes it’s nice to just zone out and watch a movie with someone, and not have to worry about talking. If your wallet isn’t up for both dinner and a movie, try going out for Rita’s after, or make some chocolate covered strawberries before you leave so you can enjoy them when you get back home.
-Ice Skating, because there’s nothing more romantic than falling down together. When you need to warm up, go out to a Starbucks or coffee shop to get some coffee or hot cocoa!
-Make a date out of wedding planning! Do you need to tour venues? Go together, and grab a coffee on your way! Do you need to taste cakes? Make it a reservation for two! Are you getting your engagement pictures done? Let your fancy outfits live a little longer and go out for dessert after. Anything can be a date if you’re with the person you love!
